"Moldy Walls and Rats" Tenant Says She's Fed Up With Apartment Conditions

CANTON, Miss. (Take 30 News) --- We all want to live somewhere clean. But from moldy walls to rat traps, one tenant at Canton Garden Apartments in Canton said she's complained to her apartment's manager for the past three years about her living conditions and no progress has been made. That tenant, recently widowed, said she can't afford to move out of the subsidizing housing and feels trapped.

"Pitiful! I hate it here," tenant Tameka Carson said of her apartment.

Our camera caught a roach crawling on an interior wall, and Carson said that's just one of the problems she's dealing with.

"Nothing is getting done. I'm sick and tired of complaining to the landlord and other tenants about my living situation. I have been told several times 'I'll fix it when I get a chance'," Carson said.

Carson said she's lived in the complex for five years and that three years ago the property's condition worsened. She said it's the holes and cracks in the walls allowing roaches and rats to get inside. She said her ceiling is also cracked from water leaking from the second floor.

"One night I was in the tub relaxing and the water came down like rain. Rats are always running around getting into all my food," Carson said.

And she said that water leaking from the bathroom ceiling has caused mold.

'You can tell by the look of my apartment that they haven't do anything yet to fix this situation," Carson said.

She said she's also not happy with the outside appearance of the complex. When Take 30 was on property, the office was closed, with a sign on the door indicating it was closed for lunch. The landlord did respond to Take 30's email and said the apartments are undergoing new changes and the tenants should look for repairs no later than October 16th.
