MISSISSIPPI STATE, Miss. (Take 30 News) --The MSU Freshman Council hosted it's first event, "Popping into the New Year," to help college students cope with stress, and help them come up with New Years resolutions for the spring semester.

Yasmine Davis, Freshman Council Coordinator, spoke to Take 30 News about why the event was essential to the student body at MSU.

"Our event, "Popping into the New Year," this is our first event for freshman council. It took about a month to prepare for this event. Basically, the purpose of this event we have on the banner over there baggage left in 2019 so basically just all the bad things that happen in 2019 we leaving it all, and on the right side we have 2020 vision which means all the new things and great things we want to happen in 2020 and so this is just giving students the opportunity to feel elated to just be here on campus and just some inspiration for them", Davis said.

Other freshman council volunteers were asked how this event can be beneficial to college students and the importance of dealing with stress while in college.

"Basically, the purpose of our event is to give away free popcorn for the students here and to help them come up with new year's resolutions and goals", Claire Allen said.

Freshman council worker Madison Dochety explained that they not only advocate for freshman, but the school as a whole, as stress has become a major concern when relating to college students.

"As a whole we represent the entire freshman body so throughout the year we are working whether its policies the policies with the senate or just putting on events like this to encourage students not just freshman with the new transition," Dochety said.
