STARKVILLE, Miss. (Take 30 News)- - Safety is a big concern for many people on Mississippi State University's campus. Whether you are a parent, student, or even teacher, making sure you make it home at night to family and friends is everyone’s daily goal.
Mississippi State Student Alexis Hardiman lives on campus and walks a lot, as she doesn’t have a vehicle.
“I have night classes and walk to get food on campus” Hardiman said.
Since Hardiman has night class, she took it upon herself to participate in a self-defense seminar to better protect herself. At No Limit Jit Jitsu, instructor Jae McIntosh, taught students, children, and even teachers on how to skillfully defend themselves regardless of their active level.
Jae McIntosh felt as though many people have the wrong interpretation of what self-defense is.
“A lot of people think self-defense as this mysterious endeavor or altercation where you know what they will do all these things but it really comes down to will you go home at night. You do what it takes to see your family” McIntosh said.
Alexis didn’t just stop her safety concern at the seminar, she also has her own personal tactics that she uses.
“I try stay in well-lit areas that has other people walking around,” Hardiman said.
