Choctaw Tribal Schools Providing Meals for Students During COVID-19 Crisis

PHILADELPHIA, Miss.  (Take 30 News)--- The Choctaw Tribal Schools is handing out Grab-n-Go Lunches for students.

For social distancing, the drive-thru style is for the safety of the staff and the families. Within the communities on the reservation, the school provides lunches for the children in the community who are 18 years and under.

“We average about 90 a day, so uh 450 a week,” Tucker Elementary School Principal Gene Cliburn said.

The children must be present in order to receive lunch since it is a “first come, first serve” basis. No adult meals will be provided.

While school is out, the workers also hand out homework packets to keep the students entertained but also continue learning.

“I would say we given out about three-quarters of our homework packets,” Cliburn said.
