Teachers Adapting to New Normal, Virtual Classrooms

By Kelsey Duncan

MARIETTA, Ga (Take 30 News) --- All Marietta City Schools and offices closed on Monday, March 16 until further notice causing teachers and students to move to virtual learning. Some teachers said they are not looking forward to teaching via Zoom calls from home.

Marietta Middle School Teacher Demeterus Duncan said he finds the virtual method of teaching more difficult.

“I'm having to work from home because of the coronavirus, I'm sure everybody is aware of that and how we have to transition from a basic traditional format from teaching in front of the classroom with the students present to now having online type learning that has to take place," Duncan said.

Duncan said it has been more work on his behalf to teach online since he is used to teaching in front of students.

Many students are ecstatic about the closing of schools due to the Coronavirus outbreak. But teachers at MMS said they are not prepared for virtual teaching.

"This type of teaching I really don't like, and I'm really not used to. Maybe it's something I need to. Maybe it's something I need to get used to," Duncan said.

"My husband is a school teacher and since the Coronavirus, it has taken an effect on him, I’m sure as well as the students, because he's the type that gives the students hands on, he's in front of them and giving them what they need right there personally but doing it online I can see that he's getting frustrated," Duncan’s wife, Warnetta Duncan said.

Duncan says he will be happy once all of this is over and he can go back to teaching in front of the students.
