Mississippi State received a grant to start a program called the lantern project that is digitizing the records of former slaves in Mississippi.
In this you can find bills of sale, jail receipts, medical bills, and family letters that document slaves.
Coordinator of Manuscripts at MSU Jennifer McGillan said she’s seen the need for digitized records first hand. She said the descendants of the Duncan and Blackwell Family Plantation of New Albany were struggling to trace their roots when the families decided to contribute to the archives at Mississippi State.
MSU will have no restrictions giving the public equal access to these documents.
