Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves Issues Shelter-In-Place Order

STARKVILLE, Miss. (Take 30 News)— At the time of writing, Mississippi reported 1,073 confirmed cases of the Coronavirus and 22 deaths, including 136 new cases since last Tuesday, the largest single day increase yet. After reviewing the facts Governor Tate Reeves decided to take action.

 

In the last month, life as we know has been changing every other day. The coronavirus pandemic has caused Governor Tate Reeves to take drastic measures.

 

“Today is the day, we're announcing the shelter-in-place order. It will go into effect Friday at 5 p.m. I'm going to sign it, while we're here," Governor Tate Reeves said.

 

The order began Friday, April 3, 2020 and be in effect until Monday, April 20, 2020. The guidelines of the statewide shelter-in-place order instructs individuals to stay home except for limited allowances, when outside follow all social distance guidelines, all non-essential businesses must stop all activities, and social gatherings more than 10 must be cancelled. Local resident Dana Minor expresses her thoughts about the order.

 

"The virus really worries me, because the life that we knew before the virus, we would not have it again. We can’t go to work, we can’t visit our friends, can’t go see relatives for the fear of getting sick" Minor said.

 

Governor Reeves said he believes the order is the right tool, at the time to saves lives. he says the goal of the order is to prevent our health care system from being overwhelmed.

 

"As leaders, our top priority is and always will be the safety of our citizens. Every day for the last several weeks, we have met with our health experts. We've had conversations and we have

asked and discussed when is the right time to do various things," Governor Tate Reeves said.

 

Governor Reeves said this will not be easy for anyone, but believes it is the right course of action.
