OKTIBBEHA COUNTY, Miss. (Take 30 News)--- The recent dam failure at Oktibbeha County Lake has many residents furious with local leaders. Some locals addressed their concerns on Facebook regarding the lack of funds needed to cover the repairs, while others believe that the county supervisors have not done anything at all to address the issue.
One Facebook user said “The county should be held liable. They can’t get funds to fix a major issue but can get them to pave Longview Road when it didn’t need it.”
Another Facebook user stated, “County supervisors have been putting this project off for years.”
District 3 Supervisor Marvell Howard spoke about the rebuilding process.
“So what we're doing at this particular time is first of all, to take steps immediately to make sure that danger doesn't happen again. Then we're looking for funding long term, so that we can replace that levee and make sure that this doesn't happen again uh uh ever going forward,” said Howard.
The Oktibbeha County courthouse is where the board of supervisors will hold their meeting to discuss their long-term plan for the Oktibbeha County lake dam.
“We're talking with the community and we're trying to get as much information as we possibly can. On February, 24, we have a town hall discussion about the Oktibbeha County Lake, so that citizens can come and ask any question that they'd like to know, they can have input as to their feelings toward the levee and what they think should be done with the county lake” said Howard.
For those planning to attend the town hall meeting, it will begin at 5:30 PM at the Oktibbeha County Courthouse on Main Street. Early arrival is encouraged; officials expect there to be standing room only.
