STARKVILLE, Miss. (Take 30 News)---Starkville’s Parks and Recreation Department introduced the Challenger Basketball league in January. The league was created for children with special needs and would grant them the opportunity to participate in a competitive basketball environment.
Challenger basketball is common in other cities and it has finally made its way to Starkville.
League coordinator Nick Callahan spoke fondly about their vision for the league.
“Ok so with basketball this was like our you know like I said our first time. I would like to see the basketball grow as well as being able to extend our offerings to not just basketball but baseball, softball, kickball, flag football; you know other sports that we offer to the community that we can also adapt and offer for our challenger leads and just create a whole new niche of offerings in the community,” Callahan said.
Children from the ages of five to eighteen are eligible to compete in the league. The games will be held at the Travis Outlaw Center.
